The Four Hundred Pound Gorilla

Late this evening, about an hour ago, I decided to stop working on the infrastructure for a new website called 'The Four Hundred Pound Gorilla'. A silly looking place holder version is here. The place holder version is simple html and one image. The aborted infrastructure utilized ASP.NET and SQL 2008 Server. I had hoped to incorporate Silverlight technology to develop a replacement website design.

During the last two weeks I encountered problem after problem after problem setting up a development environment. I almost enjoyed investigating PHP, Python, and MySQL developer software; but, I discovered that I preferred a better and more structured (IDE) Integrated Development Environment (eg: Visual Web Developer 2008). I briefly considered Java.

Most of the problems I encountered involved upgrading from earlier versions of Visual Web Developer and SQL Server, software setup, and transfer of SQL databases between versions of SQL Server (eg: from 2005 to 2008 server environments). I now understand why Microsoft strongly suggests NOT transferring databases between versions of SQL Server using Attach and Detach server commands - the process is a can of worms that require a seasoned SQL Server administrator/engineer to accomplish because of the 'database not in sysindex table' problem. Fortunately, I found a way to create, update and access previously created SQL databases via Visual Web Developer 2008 by modifying the data connection property 'Use SQL Instance' from true to false.

The tipping point for my decision came when installation of Silverlight issued an 'out of memory' error! This stems from trying to install software designed for a 1-gb (physical ram memory) computer on a computer (my laptop) that has 512 meg of physical memory (2-gb virtual memory).

The following thumbnail images were made from screen snapshots of various aspects of the Four Hundred Pound Gorilla project. You may left click on a thumbnail to view a larger image (optimized for download).

So much for living with a four hundred pound gorilla - turns out my house (eg: my laptop) is much too small for Max. I also came to the realization that I may not want to spend so much time in front of a computer - again! - unless the money is really good! At least I have this page as a journal entry for archival and memory recall.
