I completed the three-week certificate program at Arkansas Commercial Driver Training Institute (ACDTI),
located in Newport, in September 2006. Click the above photo to visit the ACDTI website.
The 180-hour program, conducted by Arkansas-DOT-certified instructors / testers, consists of classroom
instruction, driving skills practise, highway driving/tests, DOT-mandated drug tests and medical
examination, and certification testing by
the Arkansas Highway Patrol. Upon completion, the student has earned an Arkansas Class A Commercial
Drivers License (CDL). Out-of-state students "swap" this CDL for an equivalent CDL in their home state.
Construction of The University of Arkansas at Newport campus, and truck driver training building,
was completed circa 1994. The campus and buildings are modern, clean, well maintained, and help to provide
students with a safe and enjoyable learning environment. The on-campus cafeteria serves breakfast and
lunch meals. The campus is located approximately 1.5 miles from downtown Newport.
The following four photos show a few areas of the driving skills practise course. The course, located behind the school
property, is set up at a converted WW-II military airfield. Approximately forty tractor-trailer
rigs are available for student use.
